The Heart of Arabia – now open for travelers!
For over decades, it’s a wish for many adventurers to travel to the heart of Arabia: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. But the country kept its doors firmly locked. Pilgrims to Mecca and Medina en masse and business travelers were welcome, but tourists we not allowed to enter the country.
This all changed in the fall of 2019; the borders opened up and for the coming years, Saudi Arabia wants to invest considerably to attract more and more tourists. Tourism is still in its infancy with all its advantages and disadvantages. But finally, you can follow the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia yourself!
There are many things to see and to discover. From the famous temples of the Nabataeans (similar to Petra in Jordan) to endless emptiness of the Rub al Khali, the biggest desert in the world (also known as the Empty Quarter). Old excavations in the desert but also modern cities such as Riyadh or Jeddah. Snorkeling in the Red Sea or laze out on the beach? That’s also possible! And did you know that Saudi Arabia has green mountains with rustic mountain villages and fortified settlements that are similar to the villages in Yemen?
