Hero City Brest

If there is a city in Russia connected to the Second World War, it is Brest. After the non-agression pact (Molotov-Von Ribbentrop pact) between Hitler and Stalin in 1939, Hitler decided unexpectedly in 1941 with Operation Barbarossa to invade the Soviet Union. The first showdown took place on June 22 in Brest. The resistance of the Soviet army was greater than expected, and despite a shortage of food, water and weapons, the Soviet army held up against German force majeure for 8 days. Only then was the Brest fort conquered.

Brest owes its name "Hero City" to this heroic battle. The fort is now a memorial site of the Great Patriotic War. In the middle of the fort is a huge, classic Soviet memorial, with wreaths for all other hero cities.
Every year thousands of Russians travel to Brest to visit this fort. Don't be surprised if you see Russians and their children walking around in military uniforms.

Apart from this fort there is not much to see, but Brest is a pleasant city. The old center is cozy with pedestrian streets full of restaurants, cafes and terraces. Because Brest can be visited visa-free, many foreigners (especially Poland) like to come to Brest for a day.
