Travel and Covid in China

Read here the latest travel advice about travel and corona, travel restrictions, an entry ban and quarantine measures in China.

It all started in China, probably sometime in December 2019, at a market in Wuhan. Meanwhile, the lockdown in Wuhan has been lifted and life in China has picked up again. Strict measures have been relaxed, but the situation is being monitored on a daily basis. Should the virus spread again, the strict measures will be reintroduced.

Current situation in China during Covid times

We are in contact with our local agents regularly, and of course we keep getting updates from them occasionally.

News from China
Recently, vaccination has begun in China. The country has developed  its own - a trio of vaccines. At the time of writing, some 50 million Chinese are said to have already been vaccinated.
We have been able to go to China for a while now.... but not that easily!  The embassy is open 1 day a week for visa applications but only with a personal invitation will you be eligible for a visa. Travelers who are allowed to travel must show a negative PCR-Covid-19, a negative IgM antibody test result (no older than 48 hours at the time of departure and validated by the Chinese Embassy), and an approved QR code when boarding the plane. The country has largely kept the coronavirus at bay in recent months, thanks to extensive testing and sweeping measures such as large-scale lockdowns. Occasional cases of infections are reported. These areas are immediately sealed off to prevent the spread, and people in these high-risk areas are also immediately tested.

In other parts of China, traveling and working life continues as usual. The local government has relaxed some corona measures and public life has gradually resumed.
  • Domestic air travel has resumed. There is limited international air travel.
  • Domestic train and bus services have resumed. Internationally this is not yet the case.
  • Shopping centers, stores, museums, attractions, hotels, restaurants and other catering establishments are open again.
  • It is mandatory to wear mouth masks in public places.
  • Body temperature is taken when entering public places.
  • Citizens are checked for a health app or a QR code that allows access to areas, shopping centers, etc. Both app and code work with color codes green, orange and red. Only green gives access to be allowed to enter the area.

Flights at the time of Covid
Currently, the number of foreigners who need to travel to China is gradually increasing. To ensure the health and safety of international travel and reduce the risk of cross-border spread of the epidemic, the Chinese government has specified relevant regulations and procedures for access control. For specific requirements, please refer to the notification from the Chinese Embassy.

- As of November 8, 2020, a negative result of an IgM antibody test is also required. This test result must not be older than 48 hours at the time of departure. In addition, you must have this test result validated by the Chinese embassy in the Netherlands and you will receive a QR code. This QR code must be shown when boarding your flight. You can find more information on the website of the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands.

- You must wear a mask when boarding and during the flight. The flight attendants will check your temperature several times before boarding and during the flight.

- The quarantine period after arrival in China is 14 days. In the last two days, the second PCR check will be performed. During the quarantine period, it is mandatory to stay inside the hotel room.
