Azerbaijan is the richest of the three states in the Caucasus region, with its oil and gas in the Caspian Sea. Already in the 20th century oil was mined and the many nodding donkeys around Baku still remembers their prosperity in this period of Baku oil barons. Baku is a cosmopolitan city with a buzzing old center. The old town is reminiscent of Turkish cities, not weird, Azerbaijan is after all an Islamic county. As soon as you leave the city, you will enter another world. Here you will travel between the traditional mountain villages, the Soviet-like countryside and ancient caravan cities like Sheki, the main attraction of the country.
